Job Call: Africa Regional Strategy Lead

The Association for Progressive Communications is looking for an Africa Regional Strategy Lead to join our virtual office and team.

Overview of the position:

Purpose of the position: The Africa Regional Strategy Lead will provide direction for and coordinate APC’s advocacy work and movement building strategy on digital rights and internet governance in the region. This will include developing and implementing Africa-focused projects, supervising staff supporting this work and working closely with APC staff leading other areas of work in Africa. The Africa Regional Strategy Lead will contribute to strengthening relationships between APC and its members and partners in the region and will work closely with APC teams working on global policy advocacy.

Start date: 15 November 2022.*

The successful applicant is expected to attend the Internet Governance Forum in Ethiopia on 28 November to 2 December 2022.

Location: The applicant can work from anywhere but must come from and live on the African continent. APC provides an equipment allowance and requires staff to use their own computers and office equipment. International and regional travel will be required occasionally. APC is a networked organisation based primarily in the global South, and privileges this political lens and location in our work.

Remuneration and duration of contract: This is a 1.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) position on a renewable 12-month contract. Contract renewal is dependent on performance and the availability of funding. (There will be a six-month probation period). Remuneration is in the range of USD 45,000 to USD 55,000. Short-listed applicants will receive specific information about the salary range.

Who we are looking for:

  • You believe in APC’s vision and mission and have worked for organisations or networks with similar goals and values.
  • You have experience in policy advocacy work related to digital rights, internet governance and gender justice in Africa.
  • You are an experienced networker who is equally comfortable networking in an online environment and in-person.
  • You are quick and competent in writing and responding to email correspondence.
  • You are experienced and competent in compiling and writing policy submissions and reports.
  • You are flexible, can work to deadlines, have tons of initiative and like solving problems.
  • You are ready to and enjoy travelling to meetings and events.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leading and directing the implementation of APC’s advocacy work in Africa, including drafting statements and submissions and representing APC in policy advocacy spaces in the region and globally.
  • Leading APC’s regional network building strategy, including engaging with APC members and deepening APC relationships with key stakeholders in existing networks and other actors in the region.
  • Supporting the implementation of Africa-focused activities and projects, including the annual African School on Internet Governance (AfriSIG).
  • Developing and implementing an Africa advocacy communications plan working closely with the APC communications team.
  • Contributing to resource mobilisation and fundraising for the Africa regional strategy.
    Supervising and supporting Africa project consultants and staff.

The Ideal Candidate has:

  • An understanding of digital rights, internet governance, and feminist and development issues in Africa.
  • Experience in national and regional policy advocacy in Africa and understanding of policy-making dynamics, spaces and processes and policy advocacy strategies and tools.
  • Interest in and commitment to collaborating with APC members and partners and to network building in the region.
  • An approach to work management including planning, prioritising and organising tasks to effectively meet deadlines and achieve results.
  • Excellent English written and oral communications skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team, cross-culturally and across time zones.
  • An ability to self-direct and work independently and within a team.
  • Experience working in an online virtual/remote environment.

Also an advantage:
Proficiency in French.
