Publishing research products in international peer-reviewed journals is critical in gaining credibility and authority in technical areas of expertise. One only gets cited if one gets published! In demonstration of academic aptitude and scientific productivity, research products must get published. However, insufficient scientific writing capacity and time limitations do limit research publication. Many postgraduate students prepare great theses but shelf them in the university library where they are unlikely to be accessible by the rest of the world. These early career researchers can potentially benefit from mentorship by senior researchers. However, a firm foundation in scientific writing is key. To address this, the African Population and Health Research Center invites eligible individuals to participate in a five (5) day short course training in Scientific Writing and Publishing.

The objective of this short course is to equip participants with knowledge and skills to prepare scientific manuscripts based on their own research data. By the end of the course, participants will be able to: Prepare the major sections of a scientific paper Prepare a great title, abstract, and well-structured paper Observe ethical considerations critical in scientific writing Learn best practices for journal identification and paper submission Understand editorial processes and be able to address reviewers’ comments Navigate the editorial process, including how to write strong cover letters, address reviewers’ comments, and handle different editorial decisions including appeals

Who should attend?

Program PhD/MSc students, Post docs, and other researchers interested in refreshing their writing skill

Methodology

The workshop will be highly interactive and discussion-based characterized by active participation of all attendees. A mixture of short lectures, small group work, and individual/group presentation and discussion will be employed.

* Participants are expected to have their own data prior to the workshop

* The course will be conducted in English.
