Catherine Ngugi

Advocacy Communication Lead

Catherine Ngugi joined the Advocacy Accelerator in February, 2020. Originally trained as a marketer by a leading multi-national, Catherine’s career has spanned the education and development sectors in Africa. Until 2018, Catherine ran OER Africa, a donor-funded initiative she founded in 2008 to provide faculty in English speaking Africa with the support, tools and expertise required to leverage available technologies to improve teaching and learning. During a decade at the helm, Catherine focused on communication and partnership strategies that leveraged project and donor diversification based on organizational relevance, visibility and credibility. Prior to that, Catherine had established the African Virtual University’s Research & Innovation Facility.

Catherine holds an MA from the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). She has worked in Dakar, Senegal with the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA), where she initiated and coordinated a grants management system and designed an Endowment Plan. Prior to that, Catherine established a Secretariat for Safina, a Kenyan political party which championed constitutional change as the primary means for addressing the excessive Executive powers. In Senegal, she also worked with Oxfam GB towards being more responsive to partner needs by enhancing project sustainability for Oxfam partners in Senegal, Mali and Mauritania, whom she trained in resource mobilization and communication strategies.

A Rockefeller Associate of the African Gender Institute (AGI) Catherine has consulted in higher education and the Arts and is a published author of creative and educational works. She is also an occasional thespian.
